What it means to be a Friend

In the early 1950’s, a movement called Friends of the Library began its program to support local libraries throughout the United States. In Adams County, a Friends of the Library chapter was introduced in 1959. Since then, its purpose has been to maintain an association of people interested in library development, by focusing attention on library services, its facilities and needs, and to stimulate gifts to the library.

In 2012, the Adams County Friends of the Library donated $60,000 for a variety of programs and materials for the library system.  This support extends not only to the Gettysburg Library, but also the bookmobile, the Harbaugh-Thomas Library in Biglerville, the Fairfield Area Library, the New Oxford Area Library, and the Littlestown Library.

The Adams County Friends of the Library raises financial support for the library in three ways: annual membership dues; the sale of book donations at the Friends Store; and the Summer Book Sale Bonanza.  Our goal is to have each of these areas generate one third of the total financial contribution to the library. As we enter 2013, we continue to need the generous support of our local communities. 

An excellent way to lend such support is renewing your annual membership or joining the Friends of the Library through annual membership. Annual membership dues can help the library deepen and broaden its holdings; for example, more popular authors and more copies of each bestseller, speeding the time it takes for residents to get the most popular titles; another example is allowing the library to purchase materials from first time authors.

Members of the Friends of the Library receive a 20% discount on all book purchases from the Friend’s bookstore.  The Friend’s also offers opportunities to volunteer and help your library. Opportunities are available in our bookstore, summer book sale, processing used books, or in helping with mailings.

Please consider joining the Friends of the Library. You can stop by the Friend’s store at the Gettysburg Library and pickup an application.
